Traditional Medicare is great for seniors who are relatively healthy. But in the event of serious illness, those 20% specialist and hospital copays, to say nothing of 100% prescription costs, can be real IRA-killers.

For example, if you take multiple prescription meds, they can offer you a Part D (as in Drugs) plan that covers many of your prescription costs. Depending on the plan’s formula, many generics will be zero-cost, some will have small, 25%, copays, and brand-name drugs will have higher ones – sometimes substantially higher.

A Medicare Advantage Plan includes Part D coverage, plus many other benefits. If you see providers only within the plan’s HMO or PPO network, there’s no co-payment to see your primary care physician, and seeing a specialist entails only relatively small, fixed copay. Prescription copayments can be as little as zero dollars for the lowest tier of generics. And there are benefits including dental, vision, and hearing benefits, plus free health club memberships. Most Advantage Plans have no monthly or annual premiums.

Or you can choose a Medicare supplement insurance plan. As the name implies, they supplement traditional Medicare. In return for a monthly premium, they pay all your 20% Medicare co-payments. They don’t come with Part D coverage, so in addition to your Part B (doctor care) coverage and your premiums, you’ll need to pay for a Part D plan as well.
